چکیده

With the exception of nitrogenase, molybdenum is present in a diverse, but coherent group of enzymes which contain a pterin molybdenum cofactor (Moco) as a prosthetic group [l]. This group of enzymes, known as the molybdenum oxotransferases and hydroxylases, carry out a two-electron oxidation-reduction reaction which is linked to oxygen atom transfer to or from a substrate. This is illustrated by the reaction catalysed by dimethyl sulphoxide (Me,SO) reductase, the subject of this paper:

Insertional gene inactivation in a phototrophic sulphur bacterium: APS-reductase-deficient mutants of Chromatium vinosum.

In purple sulphur bacteria of the family Chromatiaceae sulphite oxidation via intermediary formation of adenylylsulphate is an enzymologically well characterized process. In contrast, the role of an alternative direct oxidation pathway via the enzyme sulphite:acceptor oxidoreductase has not been resolved. This paper reports the cloning of the genes encoding the adenylylsulphate-forming enzyme a...

Diversity of Purple Phototrophic Bacteria, Inferred from pufM Gene, within Epilithic Biofilm in Tama River, Japan

The diversity of purple phototrophic bacteria in algae-dominated biofilm of a streambed in Tama River, Japan was investigated. Clone library analysis of the pufM gene encoding a subunit of the photochemical reaction center of purple bacteria detected 18 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in several classes of Proteobacteria. Most of the OTUs showed less than 85% identity to the PufM amino acid ...

Photosynthesis Is Widely Distributed among Proteobacteria as Demonstrated by the Phylogeny of PufLM Reaction Center Proteins

Two different photosystems for performing bacteriochlorophyll-mediated photosynthetic energy conversion are employed in different bacterial phyla. Those bacteria employing a photosystem II type of photosynthetic apparatus include the phototrophic purple bacteria (Proteobacteria), Gemmatimonas and Chloroflexus with their photosynthetic relatives. The proteins of the photosynthetic reaction cente...

Remarkable diversity of phototrophic purple bacteria in a permanently frozen Antarctic lake.

Although anoxygenic photosynthesis is thought to play an important role in the primary productivity of permanently frozen lakes in the Antarctic dry valleys, the bacterial communities responsible for this metabolism remain uncharacterized. Here we report the composition and activity of phototrophic purple bacteria in Lake Fryxell, Antarctica, as determined by analysis of a photosynthesis-specif...

Sulfite oxidation in the purple sulfur bacterium Allochromatium vinosum: identification of SoeABC as a major player and relevance of SoxYZ in the process.

In phototrophic sulfur bacteria, sulfite is a well-established intermediate during reduced sulfur compound oxidation. Sulfite is generated in the cytoplasm by the reverse-acting dissimilatory sulfite reductase DsrAB. Many purple sulfur bacteria can even use externally available sulfite as a photosynthetic electron donor. Nevertheless, the exact mode of sulfite oxidation in these organisms is a ...
